Spartan US 20

The EJSIC is now offering US Currency Portraits for our readers. Just send us a hundred dollar bill and a photo and we’ll get back to you.

Sports

  • Two Louisville basketball players were arrested over the weekend. Rick Pitino has heard their message loud and clear and will now guarantee more minutes for both.
  • Golfer loses his arm to gator. Happy Gilmore is en route.

POP

  • 25 defaced pieces of US currency. It’s going to be useless soon anyway, right?
  • Tara Reid poses for Playboy. I’m guessing the 5 people who haven’t seen her boobs yet will be thrilled.
  • 9 words that don’t mean what you think. (Cracked)

Politics

  • Glenn Beck + Cocaine = Stephen Colbert.
  • Fox News watchers are generally more misinformed than other major news watchers. I would say this is surprising, but that would be misleading.

Rupert Murdoch in 2007. Hard to believe he looks even older now.

Rupert Murdoch in 2007. Hard to believe he looks even older now.

Fox News, long criticized for their use of the term “fair and balanced,” has become one of the most popular cable news channels in America. They have forced other mainstream media outlets to pander to specific interest groups and can proudly proclaim to be the reason no one in this country trusts any media outlets. For a long time, the only ones providing news their daily viewers wanted to see were the folks at Fox, but then to increase ratings and become more competitive, MSNBC, CNN, and others have decided that the reason Fox is popular must be their devoted audience, earned by saying what they wanted to hear, not necessarily the news. And so now if you want real news, you better hope you’re there when it happens. Otherwise, you’ll watch 6 hours of OJ driving on the interstate while a block of houses in your neighborhood burned down without mention.

But, the interesting thing about Fox is that Rupert Murdoch had a vision, and succeeded as he always seems to. When he started the station, they lost money hand over fist. It took nearly seven years for Murdoch to recover those losses, make a profit, and become the most watched cable news channel.

And this is where the WNBA comes in. After watching CNN and MSNBC fall apart and stop reporting the news in an effort to sway the far left to their list of regular viewers, the WNBA realized how effective Murdoch had been. And so they stole his playbook. Fox was started in 1996 and rose to the top of the ratings game by 2002. Similarly, the WNBA was created in 1997 and wants to rise to the top of the ratings. After 12 years, it appears they are finally on track to break even. David Stern stated that, “the NBA is far less profitable than the WNBA. We’re losing a lot of money amongst a large number of teams. We’re budgeting the WNBA to break even this year” (from WNBA Wikipedia page).
